“Thor,” which spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and is forced to live among humans. A beautiful, young scientist, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), has a profound effect on Thor, as she ultimately becomes his first love. It’s while here on Earth that Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.
Kenneth Branagh was already known as a perfect director, but Thor is a proof that he isn't interested only in Shakespeare. We weren't able to have more than a brief look on Asgard in trailers and footages released before the premiere. I wasn't sure how it would be, but I can tell you that what I saw was more than I expected. It was a beautiful and remarkable experience with it's amazing CGI and 3D. Crew managed to make you feel like in medieval Scandinavia. On the other hand Asgard wasn't fully demonstrated. Actions took place only in Odin's Palace and Bifrost Bridge.
Loki and Thor |
Heimdall |
The best two additional characters were Loki and Heimdall. Loki is the best antagonist in the Avengers Franchise. Thor starred two oscar-winning actors, Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman. They both did a great job, but for Portman, it was usual performance. Hopkins' character was a lot more interesting. As we all know, Branagh is known for his love and interest in William Shakespeare. Odin's speeches were the only aspect in the film, which was probably a little influenced by Shakespeare and it was really good.
Asgard scenes, monsters, Bifröst bridge and Heimdall's transport were awesome. Throughout the film, battle scenes took place in Asgard, Jötunheimr and on the Earth. First two were really impressive and well-made. However I was disappointed with Earth combat between Destroyer and the Warriors Three.
Battle in Jötunheimr |
When development of the movie began, I thought that Thor wouldn't fit The Avengers franchise, because it was about gods (aliens), not mutant superheroes. However I am quite satisfied with Branagh's decision not to make us pay much attention on that.
Thor and agent Coulson |
And at last - Post-credits scene.
